Tips When Buying Used Fitness Equipment:

1. Make sure you have the opportunity to see it and try it out.  Make sure the all the features are operational and that it feels comfortable and sturdy.

2. If you're having something shipped, make sure you have the right to refuse it upon inspection and have it sent back if it is not representative of what you thought you were purchasing.

3. Inspect the unit for excessive use.  Look for things like rust/corrosion on the frame, broken welds, and parts that have been modified.

4. Verify that parts are still available should it need repair and that there are technicians to perform the repair by obtaining the model and serial number, then calling the manufacturer directly.  Google the manufacturer's name and find the customer support phone number or email on their website.  Most manufacturers can tell you the approximate age of the unit as well.  If you can't find the manufacturer, chances are they're out of business.

5. For cardio equipment, if you can find the manufacturer's specifications online or in the owner's manual (usually online), verify the user weight capacity and make sure that any potential users are within those guidelines.

6. Confirm whether you're buying equipment "as-is" or "refurbished".  You can verify refurbished cardio equipment by asking to see under the shrouds and get a list of parts that were rebuilt and/or replaced, along with any documentation to substantiate those claims if you're unable to tell by looking.  If the unit has been refurbished, ask whether any new parts installed carry a warranty.
